Ad Hoc Committee of Ministers on Public Security and Anti-Terrorism

The Government of Canada is taking decisive action to address the concerns of Canadians about their security.

The Prime Minister established an Ad Hoc Committee of Ministers on Public Security and Anti-Terrorism on October 1, 2001. The Committee, which is chaired by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Manley, is developing a strategy to address immediate challenges facing the government in the area of public security. The Ad Hoc Committee will complete its work before the end of this year.

In addition to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the members of the Ad Hoc Committee include the Deputy Prime Minister, the Solicitor General, and the Ministers of Transport, Finance, National Defence, Justice, National Revenue, Intergovernmental Affairs, and Citizenship and Immigration.

Ministers are reviewing policies, legislation, regulations and programs across government to adjust all aspects of our public security approach in light of the events of September 11. They are making recommendations on how to address issues related to the security of Canadians in a way that respects Canadian values. They are looking specifically at issues related to Canada's relationship with the United States, such as border safety.

New initiatives as soon as they are announced will be distributed via the Fighting Terrorism Page on the Canada Site.
