Put the Philippines on your global value chain

Toronto, July 27-28, 2009 > The Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) is coming to Canada to promote the Philippines as an ideal place for Canadians to do business.

The business mission will be led by Oscar Sanez, BPAP’s Chief Executive Officer, and will include about 10 Filipino businesspeople and government officials. The objective of the mission is to showcase the Philippines as a world-class investment destination to the global business processing market. Profiles of some of the mission members are outlined below.

  • BPAP: Comprised of more than 200 companies engaged in business process outsourcing, or BPO, other IT-enabled service providers and other stakeholders from allied support industries, such as telecommunications, real estate, technology providers, staffing and training.
  • Globe Telecom: A full-service telecom provider in the Philippines, serving more than 26 million mobile subscribers, 287,000 broadband subscribers and over 100,000 businesses.
  • Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company: A leading telecom service provider in the Philippines providing wireless, fixed line and ICT.
  • The Animation Council of the Philippines: The key promoter of Filipino talent, both locally and internationally. The Council and its members offer full 2D and 3D animation, including pre and post-production services.
  • Pointwest Technologies: An IT services company, providing applications management, development, integration and re-engineering, business process outsourcing and quality assurance testing services through its onshore/offshore outsourcing model.
  • Sencor: A provider of information-based solutions in the legal, financial and publishing markets.
  • The Outsourcing Alternative (MultiRational Corp.): Providing services and facilities solutions for business wishing to set up their own office in the Philippines.

Co-hosts of the delegation are the Canada-Philippines Business Council and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce (Toronto).

The program will kick off with a half day seminar and workshop on Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Ontario Investment and Trade Centre, 35th Floor, 250 Yonge Street in downtown Toronto. This will be followed-up by pre-arranged, one-on-one business meetings in the afternoon and over the following day.

The main areas that have contributed to the country’s growth are call centres, ICT and engineering, in key industries like healthcare, insurance, retail banking, pharmaceuticals and electronics, as well as cross-industry services like human resources and procurement. The country also excels in higher value processes such as animation, design services, finance, software development, engineering and back-end operations.

BPAP is looking to forge relationships with Canadian companies in these sectors through partnerships, investments and acquisition of new products and services.

Big Canadian companies like Bombardier, Telus, Sitel (owned by Onex), Manulife and Sunlife have all made the Philippines a key link in their global value chains, thus making them more competitive in the global marketplace.

In fact, the Philippines is now considered one of the most attractive investment destinations in the world, accounting for 6.7% of the estimated US$326 billion global information and communication technology outsourcing market, next to India and China.
