Chris Alexander served for 18 years as an international public servant and Canadian foreign-service officer. He was Canada's first ambassador to Afghanistan, and then the UN's deputy special representative to that war-torn country. He returned to Canada in 2009, and is now the Conservative MP for Ajax-Pickering. His book, The Long Way Back: Afghanistan's Quest for Peace, is a clear-eyed, unflinching and insightful insider's account of six years spent in Afghanistan helping to lead the largest UN mission in the world.
Dr. Alexis Crow, Research Fellow in the International Security Programme at Chatham House, heads an ambitious two-year project whose aim is to create a neutral space in which decision-makers and thought leaders from different cultural backgrounds can come together and effectively address complex security challenges that they all face. Crow argues that cultural dialogue based on norms and values—and a refusal to universalize those values—can facilitate greater security co-operation within and outside the Euro-Atlantic region.
Ahmed Ahmed was born in Helwan, Egypt, on June 27, 1970. His parents immigrated to the United States when he was one month old, and he grew up in Riverside, California. He moved to Hollywood when he was 19, to pursue a career as an actor and stand-up comedian. His documentary Just Like Us features a host of stand-up comedians performing in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Egypt, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Through a celebration of culture and comedy, this film uproots the widely held misconception that Arabs have no sense of humour.
