The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is the principal government agency delivering Canada's official development assistance around the world, including Mozambique.

Better targeting of Canada's aid dollars is essential to strengthening the impact and effectiveness of development cooperation, as well as ensuring value-for-money for Canadian contributions. Canada recently committed to focus our efforts and resources in fewer sectors and countries, specifically:

  • Promoting Good Governance
  • Improving Health Outcomes
  • Strengthening Basic Education
  • Supporting Private
  • Sector Development
  • Advancing Environmental Sustainability
  • Ensuring Gender Equality

Gender equality is a crosscutting theme throughout Canada's development cooperation. Gender equality results will be systematically and explicitly integrated across all programming within each of the five sectors of focus.

Canada has been an active supporter of development in Mozambique formore than 25 years. In 2002 Mozambique became one of CIDA's "development partners" in Africa, based on its profound poverty challenge and ability to use aid effectively.

Mozambique is the poorest country in the Southern Africa region and the 10th poorest country in the world. Important progress is being made in the fight to reduce poverty, with the percentage of Mozambicans living in absolute poverty decreasing from 69% to 54% from 1996 to 2003.

Canada's Country Development Programming Framework for Mozambique identified education as our principal sector of support, with additional investments being made in the areas of health and HIV/AIDS control; agriculture and rural development; gender equality and governance. In 2005, our bilateral support to Mozambique amounted to $42 million (CDN).

Humanitarian support continues to be provided to Mozambique as and when required, including for the current drought affecting the central and southern regions of the country.
